Hive Connected Home 2016-2017

Design team: Philip Shade, Matt Plested, Prajay Parmer, Alloy, Farnham UK. Tom Guy, Centrica, London, UK
Manufacturer: Centrica Connected Home Ltd., London, United Kingdom

As a subsidiary company of Centrica PLC who’s brands include British Gas (UK) and Direct Energy (USA), Hive Active Products aim to make the connected home a reality for everyone, not just the technophiles amongst us.

The Smart Home (IOT) sector is saturated with anonymous white rectangular box devices. The challenge was to create a rich visual design language and premium CMF for Hive, that elevates the products in this market space, while ensuring they remain suitably refined to blend seamlessly and discreetly into the home environment once installed.

Hive Connected Home is an ecosystem of low power smart home devices, the Hive Active Plug, Motion & Contact Sensors are controlled via a single app to allow peace of mind monitoring and interaction with the home from any device, anytime, anywhere in the world.

Once discreetly installed they provide reassurance with immediate information of activity in the home, and users can make informed decisions about their energy consumption.

Careful consideration to the layout of internal components and power sources, allowed for an innovative arrangement that prioritizes low power, high performance radio, and informs the overall product silhouette.

The reduced physical product volumes allow for a more subtle installation within the home, for example, the narrow elongated form of the Motion PIR Sensor allows the device to discreetly recede further into the corners of rooms than most other PIR devices, which are typically square, bulky and noticeably protrude into the living space.

Part of the design language approach on these devices was to create touch points and elements that the were consistent across products, to build familiarisation and focus the user only on the primary features essential for operation.

The coherent design language of these devices provides a flexible framework of elements that allows for future expansion of the Hive product portfolio within this identity and eco-system, building on the companies core values and enabling the brand to expand and enter new markets/territories.
